Two Inner Forces for Lasting Good Habits
Willpower is the ability to resist temptations and control impulses. In some views, willpower is a limited resource that depletes with use [18]. However, it can be strengthened. Ways to strengthen willpower include adequate sleep, healthy nutrition, stress management, and regular exercise [19]. Just as the body grows stronger with exercise, willpower grows stronger with practice.
Patience is the ability to endure hardships and disappointments on the path to goals. Sustaining good habits requires patience and perseverance. Change takes time and continuous effort [20]. Patience teaches us that every day, even a small improvement, is valuable.
Willpower and patience are complementary traits. Willpower makes the right decisions in difficult moments. Patience keeps us away from despair in the long run. When willpower depletes, patience helps us resist temptations, and vice versa.
To strengthen willpower and patience, there are practical strategies: set realistic goals, break large goals into small ones, celebrate successes, learn from failures, seek social support [21], practice gratitude, and pray. By strengthening these two forces, we can internalize positive habits and enjoy a meaningful, satisfying life. The reward of this path is freedom from the bondage of negative habits and the attainment of personal excellence.
