Why Is Nothing I Do Ever “Good Enough”?

Why Do I Always Say “Yes”?

Why Do We Sometimes Feel Alienated from Ourselves?

He said: Two years ago, I lost my job, a serious illness struck one of my close relatives, and within one month I had to move three times. That night, when I packed my bag for the last time, I had neither money nor any plan for tomorrow. I sat down on the building steps and just stayed there. I wasn’t thinking, I wasn’t crying. In that absolute emptiness, suddenly the call to prayer from the small neighbourhood mosque rose. Without thinking, I got up and walked into its courtyard. Right there, with tearful eyes, I did not recite any special prayer, I just said: “God, I can’t do anything anymore, You know how.” That night I felt that the storm would no longer swallow me completely. God is still there, and I can still find a way. I understood that in the hardest conditions, faith is an anchor and hope is the engine of movement. This writing is the voice of the heart from those difficult nights.

Faith; A Framework That Saves Us from Chaos

In a crisis, our mind constantly asks, “Why me?” If there is no answer, helplessness and despair take over. This is where faith steps in as an established semantic framework [1]. Faith tells me that this suffering is not random or meaningless; even if I don’t understand its reason. This very knowledge frees up my mental energy to shift from drowning in “why” to thinking about “how to continue” [2]. I remember in that turmoil, when I told myself “there must be a wisdom in this,” my breathing became more regular. Faith is like a deep root that a storm cannot uproot the tree.

Hope; Map‑making on Unsteady Ground

Many people mistake hope for passive optimism. But in difficult times, real hope means sitting down and saying, “The first path is closed, I will find a second, a third path” [3]. In those days of unemployment, I tried a new idea every day. Some failed, but each failure gave me new information to adjust the next path. This is the active process of hope. When I have faith that the ultimate goal remains untouched, hope turns into map‑making on shaky ground. These two forces saved me from collapse.

Combating Learned Helplessness; Temporary Setbacks Are Not the End

One of the most dangerous psychological phenomena is “learned helplessness” – when repeated failures teach us that effort is futile. Faith is the antidote to this helplessness. When I believe that difficulties are part of a larger plan, then each failure is no longer a “signal of the end” but “feedback to optimise the path” [4]. I saw myself in those months; I was rejected many times, but each time I asked, “What good can come from this?” Strangely, that very question turned me from a victim into an agent.

Beyond the Mind; Body and Community Also Benefit

Hope and faith do not only bring mental peace. Research in neuropsychology shows that positive beliefs and strong hope moderate stress hormones like cortisol – leading to healthier cardiovascular systems and less inflammation [5]. When I am hopeful, I take better care of what I eat and exercise. In those hard days when I decided to walk half an hour every day, not only my body became stronger, my mind became clearer. Beyond myself, these forces also spread to others. When my friend saw that I did not lose hope even in the worst conditions, he also felt encouraged. Hope is truly contagious [6].

Conclusion; From the Darkest Hours to Dawn

Faith and hope are not ready‑made gifts handed to us; we can cultivate them. With a short prayer, with a small goal, by giving ourselves another chance. If you are caught in a storm today, know that staying still and losing hope are not the only ways. Put your hand on your heart, tell the source of existence “I believe”, then take one step, however small. You will see that tomorrow, darkness will not prevent you from seeing the light.
