Spirituality in the Modern World: A Response to Existential Crises
Introduction:
In today’s complex world, many people face deep existential crises. These crises, which sometimes manifest as feelings of emptiness, purposelessness, or confusion, require answers beyond material solutions. Modern spirituality, as a response to these needs, offers a new form of religiosity that is more compatible with contemporary life.
Spirituality Through Time
According to research in the psychology of spirituality, the human need for connection with the transcendent is rooted in the deepest layers of the psyche. Dr. Mohammadreza Aram writes in his book “The Psychology of Spirituality”: “Although modern humans have been freed from traditional constraints, they still seek meaning and peace that can only be experienced through connection with a higher truth.” [1]
Difference Between Traditional Religiosity and Personal Spirituality
Modern spirituality has several fundamental differences from traditional religiosity. While traditional religiosity is largely based on collective rituals and the teachings of religious institutions, personal spirituality emphasizes the individual’s direct experience of the sacred. Professor Hossein Ghaffari notes in his article “Personal Spiritual Journey in the Modern World”: “In new spirituality, individuals create their own spiritual path, and this path does not necessarily pass through traditional institutions.” [2]
The Role of Crisis in Spiritual Awakening
Life crises often serve as turning points in people’s spiritual journeys. When ordinary life structures collapse, individuals search for new meaning and support. Dr. Fatemeh Shaigan’s research “Crisis and Spiritual Transformation” shows that 68% of people considered severe life crises as a catalyst for redefining their relationship with the concept of God. [3]
Spirituality as an Inner Support
One of the main functions of spirituality in the contemporary world is providing inner support against life’s storms. Contrary to common belief, this support is not for escaping reality but for facing challenges more effectively. According to Dr. Alireza Moradi in the book “Spirituality and Mental Health”: “Connection with the transcendent can create a source of resilience and hope in individuals that plays an important supportive role when facing life’s problems.” [4]
Challenges of Modern Spirituality
However, personal spirituality also faces challenges. These include the risk of extreme relativism, excessive individualism, and disconnection from wisdom traditions. Dr. Nasser Makarem warns in his article “The Responsibility of Spirituality”: “Personal spirituality is beneficial only when it directs the individual toward transcendence and ethics, rather than serving as an excuse for self-centeredness.” [5]
Conclusion
Spirituality in today’s world is a natural human response to deep existential needs. This form of religiosity, based on personal experience, creative doubt, and the search for truth, can play an important supportive role in life’s crises. However, maintaining a balance between individualism and social responsibility seems essential on this path.
