Why Is Nothing I Do Ever “Good Enough”?

Why Do I Always Say “Yes”?

Why Do We Sometimes Feel Alienated from Ourselves?

You don’t need complex tools or hefty expenses to begin uncovering your inner secrets. The most crucial tool is your own being, always with you. In this section, we’ll explore the most effective and simplest self-knowledge techniques.

Practical Techniques for Uncovering Your Inner Secrets

 Solitude with Oneself

The simplest yet most profound self-knowledge technique is dedicating even a short time for solitude with yourself. Many of us fear silence and, as soon as we are alone, turn to our phones or the TV to escape this quietude.

To practice this technique, set aside 10 to 15 minutes daily. Find a quiet place where no one will disturb you. Sit and be alone. Don’t turn on the TV, don’t pick up your phone, don’t talk to anyone. Just sit and be with yourself. You can reflect on the day’s events, or think about nothing at all.

The benefit of this solitude is that you will gradually hear your inner voice – the one that gets lost in the hustle and bustle of daily life. As Imam Ali (PBUH) said, “He who has solitude and reflects, attains insight” (8). Insight is deep vision, the opening of the eyes of the heart.

 Daily Journaling

Writing is a mirror that shows us our true selves. When we put scattered thoughts and feelings on paper, they become more tangible, and we can examine them better.

Get a simple notebook and each night, write a few lines about the day’s events. What emotions did you experience? What made you unhappy? What made you happy? What thoughts kept repeating in your mind? You don’t need to be a skilled writer. Just write honestly. This notebook is yours alone, for no one else.

After a few weeks or months, review your writings. In this review, you will clearly see your behavioral and thought patterns. You’ll realize what always bothers you, what makes you happy, and in which situations you exhibit repetitive reactions.

Meditation and Contemplation

Dedicate 5 to 10 minutes daily to this practice. Sit in a quiet place, close your eyes, and focus on your breath. When a thought arises, do not judge it or chase after it. Let it come and go, like someone sitting by a river watching leaves float by.

This exercise calms the mind and opens a window to your inner self. In this peace, you will see deeper layers of your being and gain new self-awareness.

Recognizing Emotions

Many of us don’t recognize our emotions. We just know we sometimes get angry, sometimes sad, and sometimes happy, without knowing the cause of these feelings. Recognizing emotions is a key to self-knowledge.

Whenever you experience a strong emotion, pause and ask yourself: What is this feeling? Anger? Sadness? Fear? Joy? What caused this feeling? Was my reaction proportionate to the event? What past situations have evoked this feeling in me?

Understanding emotions helps us control our reactions better. When we know what makes us angry, we can prepare to face it. When we know what makes us happy, we can make more room for it in our lives.

 Asking Others

Sometimes, others know us better than we know ourselves. They see our behavior from the outside and observe aspects we are blind to.

Ask a few trusted individuals, those you know will give you honest opinions, to describe you. Ask: “What good qualities do you think I have? What aspects of me need improvement? What behavior have you observed from me in different situations?”

These feedbacks can be very illuminating. Sometimes we are unaware of our bad habits, and others notice them. Sometimes we have talents we haven’t realized, and others remind us. However, we must accept criticism with magnanimity and not get upset quickly.

 New Experiences

Humans discover unknown parts of themselves in new situations. As long as we move on a fixed path, we don’t realize what other capabilities we possess.

Do things you haven’t tried before. Learn a new skill, travel somewhere you haven’t been, connect with new people, volunteer for a cause. Expose yourself to new experiences.

These new experiences are mirrors reflecting your hidden abilities and interests. You might discover a talent you never knew you had, or find an interest that changes the course of your life.

Reviewing the Past

Our past is a treasure trove of experiences and lessons. Consciously reviewing the past, without drowning in regret or sorrow, helps us know ourselves better.

From time to time, look back at your past. Your childhood, your adolescence, years ago. What events have occurred in your life? What choices have you made? What do you regret? What are you proud of? What lessons have you learned from the past?

Reviewing the past reveals repetitive life patterns. You’ll realize what types of choices have always been good for you and what types have harmed you. You’ll also appreciate the experiences that have brought you to where you are today.

 Essential Questions

Deep and crucial questions always lead us to the underlying layers of our being. In your solitude, ask yourself these questions and write down their answers:

– What am I seeking in life?
– What is truly valuable to me?
– If I could change only one thing in my life, what would it be?
– What do I want from life?
– What does death mean to me?
– What keeps me from inner contentment?

These questions act as a compass for life, helping us know where we are heading and whether this path is the right one.

 Paying Attention to Body Signals

Our bodies send us many messages that we often ignore. Stomachaches, tension in the shoulders, muscle cramps – all are signals from within us.

Throughout the day, pay attention to your body at times. When you’re anxious, what is your body’s posture? When you’re happy, how is it? Are your shoulders raised or relaxed? Is your heartbeat fast or slow?

Our bodies reveal subconscious emotions. Sometimes our mind denies something, but the body reveals the truth. Learning the language of the body is another gateway to self-knowledge.

Acting on Knowledge

The last and most important technique is to apply what we understand about ourselves in practice. Theoretical self-knowledge is not fruitful without action.

If you realize you have a bad habit, strive to break it. If you understand what you are passionate about, dedicate more time to it. If you know what brings you peace, incorporate more of it into your life.

Acting on what you know deepens your understanding. Each practical step opens a new window within you. Self-knowledge is a lifelong journey, and every day, we can discover a new facet of our being.
