Among all the tools and strategies for managing fear and anxiety, two elements – faith and trust (tawakkul) – play a fundamental, integrative role. They are not just techniques but a worldview that can transform your perspective on life and its challenges. Faith and trust are two wings that help you maintain balance in life’s storms.
Faith; a source of deep peace
Faith in a higher power assures you that you are not alone in this world and that a greater force watches over you. This belief is a deep source of peace. Those with strong faith are less prone to chronic fears and look at life’s problems with a more hopeful outlook. Faith shifts your focus from momentary obstacles to a long‑term perspective. Ancient texts say: “Those who believe, they have security and peace.” This security does not mean the absence of danger, but the presence of a reliable support.
Trust (Tawakkul); a shield against anxiety
Faith alone is not enough; you must also reach the stage of tawakkul. Tawakkul means entrusting your affairs to that higher power after doing your utmost. This concept is the opposite of excessive control‑seeking. When you know that the final outcome is not in your hands, you experience less anxiety about achieving the desired result. Tawakkul creates a deep sense of existential security; you know that you have a strong support. It also keeps hope alive – you know that no door is ever completely shut and a way will be opened. As ancient texts emphasise: “Whoever puts his trust in God, He will suffice him.”
Prayer, remembrance, and patience; practical tools of tawakkul
Prayer and supplication are among the most important spiritual tools against fear. Prayer provides a safe space for emotional release, connects you to the source of power, and shifts your focus from fear to that source. Remembrance (dhikr) is also one of the most effective ways to achieve peace. Patience and perseverance stand alongside faith and trust. Patience is not passivity; it is active perseverance in the face of difficulties. Patience helps you resist fears and avoid impulsive reactions. Patience and prayer – which symbolise connection with the source of existence – are mentioned as helping tools. By strengthening faith and trust, you can manage your fears and reach a peace that neither ignores dangers nor drowns in them, but is an intelligent balance between caution and confidence, effort and surrender, fear of loss and hope for gain.
