Why Is Nothing I Do Ever “Good Enough”?

Why Do I Always Say “Yes”?

Why Do We Sometimes Feel Alienated from Ourselves?

Mental health is a concept that goes far beyond the absence of mental illness. This term describes a state of well-being and satisfaction in which a person is not only free from anxiety and depression but can also cope with life’s challenges, make use of their potential, and participate meaningfully in society. Achieving this state, however, requires attention to various dimensions of individual life—dimensions that, if neglected, weaken mental health from within. Among these, two categories of needs play a fundamental role: physical needs and spiritual needs. What brings mental health into balance is not satisfying one at the expense of the other, but creating harmony between the two.

The Necessity of Balance Between Physical and Spiritual Needs for Mental Health

Physical Needs; The Foundation of Mental Health

Physical needs form the most basic and perhaps the most obvious layer of human needs. This category includes essential needs such as food, water, sleep, rest, and physical activity. Although these needs may seem obvious, their direct impact on the psyche is so profound that neglecting them places any effort toward spiritual growth in serious jeopardy.

**Healthy nutrition** is the first pillar of this foundation. Proper nutrition has a direct effect on brain function and the nervous system. Consuming healthy, nutritious foods can improve mood, increase concentration, and reduce stress [25]. In contrast, poor nutrition not only weakens the body but also drains the mind, creating the groundwork for mood swings and mental fatigue.

**Adequate and quality sleep** is the second vital pillar. Sleep is a time for physical and psychological restoration. During sleep, the brain processes the day’s information, consolidates memory, and restores depleted energy. Lack of sleep can lead to mental health problems such as anxiety, depression, and mood disorders [26]. One who spends the night restless will start the morning with a troubled mind, and this turmoil will accompany them throughout the day.

**Regular physical activity** is the third pillar of this triad. Exercise, beyond its well-known effects on physical health, triggers the release of endorphins in the brain. Endorphins are the body’s natural painkillers, helping to reduce stress, improve mood, and increase feelings of happiness [27]. A simple walk or a few minutes of mindful movement can free the psyche from the constraints of daily life and open a new horizon before it.

These three needs are the pillars of physical health, but when met properly, the individual feels security, peace, and energy. These feelings, in turn, provide a solid foundation for mental health. A calm body is a platform upon which the soul can take flight.

Spiritual Needs; Meaning and Purpose in Life

But mental health is not perfected by fulfilling physical needs alone. Human beings, beyond simply living, need a “reason” to live. This is where spiritual needs enter the field. Spiritual needs include the need for meaning, purpose, connection with others, belonging to a community, and belief in a higher power. These needs help a person feel a sense of worth, hope, and satisfaction in life.

**Finding meaning and purpose** in life is one of the most important factors in achieving mental health. When a person seeks the meaning of their life and strives to fulfill their goals, they feel motivation, satisfaction, and happiness [28]. Meaninglessness, on the other hand, leads to a sense of emptiness and confusion that can erode a person’s spirit, even amidst an abundance of material possessions.

**Connection with others** is the second pillar of spiritual needs. Strong, supportive social connections play a crucial role in mental health. Having intimate, meaningful relationships with others can reduce feelings of loneliness, increase a sense of belonging, and improve mood [29]. A person in solitude, no matter how materially comfortable, thirsts for the presence of another who understands them and accompanies them.

**Belief in a higher power** is the third pillar of these needs. Belief in a force beyond oneself can help a person feel peace, hope, and acceptance of divine destiny when facing life’s challenges [30]. This belief is an anchor that keeps the vessel of existence steady during life’s storms. When a person knows they are not alone and that wisdom governs the world, the psychological pressure caused by uncertainty decreases.

These three categories of spiritual needs, although less tangible than physical needs, have an impact on the psyche that is no less—and sometimes even deeper. A soul devoid of meaning will find no peace, even in the healthiest of bodies.

Balance Between Physical and Spiritual Needs; The Key to Mental Health

Now we arrive at the main point. Mental health is achieved neither by focusing solely on physical needs nor by neglecting them and attending only to spiritual needs. Mental health is the result of balance between these two domains. When a person attends to both categories of needs and meets them appropriately, they experience a sense of well-being and satisfaction in life. However, imbalance in these two domains—whether excess in one and deficiency in the other—can lead to the emergence of psychological problems.

One who focuses only on physical needs may have a healthy body, but a spirit that is adrift and thirsting for meaning. And one who pursues spiritual needs at the expense of neglecting their body will soon face exhaustion, insomnia, and depleted energy, and as a result, that very spiritual path becomes difficult for them.

There are specific steps to achieve this balance, each bringing a person closer to this harmony.

**The first step is prioritization.** A person must learn how to prioritize their needs and give sufficient attention to each at different times. Sometimes the physical need cries out and must be answered before anything else, and sometimes it is the soul that needs silence, meaning, or connection. Recognizing these priorities is a skill acquired through self-awareness.

**The second step is flexibility.** Life is constantly changing, and circumstances sometimes force us to adjust our plans. A person must be flexible and able to meet their needs in a way appropriate to the situation. Rigidity in method, but flexibility in goal, is the secret to maintaining balance amidst life’s ups and downs.

**The third and perhaps most important step is self-awareness.** A person must be self-aware and know what their needs are and how they can meet them. Without this awareness, any attempt to create balance will be like shooting in the dark. Self-awareness is the lamp that shows, at any moment, which need most requires attention.

Ultimately, balance between physical and spiritual needs is not a fixed destination, but a dynamic and continuous path. On this path, we may sometimes lean one way and sometimes another. But what matters is awareness of this movement and the effort to return to the point of balance. The body and the soul are two wings for flight; flight is only possible when both wings are strong and in harmony.
