Why Is Nothing I Do Ever “Good Enough”?

Why Do I Always Say “Yes”?

Why Do We Sometimes Feel Alienated from Ourselves?

It was Friday night, a small get-together of a few old friends. Everything was going well until one of them started talking about a bitter incident at work. In the middle of his story, someone in the group said impatiently, “Alright, enough. Everyone’s been through this kind of thing.” Another person got distracted and started checking their phone. A few moments later, our friend stopped talking and remained almost silent for the rest of the evening. Later, when we were alone, he told me, “I just wanted someone to understand me, but it felt like everyone was just waiting for their turn to speak.” Days passed since that night, but his words kept spinning in my head: how is it that we are so close, yet so far?

Listening; Maybe After All These Years, We Still Don’t Know How

For years I thought communication meant “talking,” and “talking” meant “I’m good at it.” But that night, my friend showed me that many of us mistake the skill of “listening” for “keeping quiet until it’s our turn.” Active listening is a dynamic and deep skill. One of those skills that is nothing like its name, and not passive at all. For example, if I’m constantly arranging my next sentence in my head while my friend is speaking, I’ve gone back to square one.

What are the features of this skill? Most importantly, “full concentration.” Not thinking about what to say, not glancing at my phone, but giving my full attention to his words, tone of voice, and body language. Research shows that understanding and using body language can influence over ninety percent of our conversations. Eye contact – many think it’s for intimidation, but it’s actually a sign of respect and trust. Even small gestures like a smile or a nod can tell the speaker, “I’m here, I’m listening, and I understand.”

After building enough trust, the next step is “clarification”; that is, instead of judging everything the speaker says with certainty, we show that we want to go deeper into their world by asking questions. For example, say, “Do you mean that…?” or “How did you feel after that happened?” There’s no room for untimely advice here.

Speaking; Neither Too Little, Nor Too Much

After we’ve mastered listening, it’s our turn to speak. For our words to be “effective,” we need to be clear and concise, avoiding long-windedness and exaggeration. Words must be honest, but not brutally honest. We need to know our audience and speak to them with respect. Let’s not forget that tone of voice has a magical effect. Sometimes a simple sentence with a warm tone carries so much meaning that a long sentence with fancy words could never achieve.

Body Language; Everything, Even Before Words

Interesting research has been done in this area: in a face-to-face interaction, the impact of body language is over fifty percent, and the impact of tone of voice is over thirty-eight percent. That means all the words we utter account for only about seven percent of the effect. The absence of body language in the digital age has caused a lot of confusion, because we’ve gotten used to “talking” to our friends behind screens. But real communication requires physical presence and reading the other person’s body language. Eyebrow positioning, not staring too much, open hands rather than crossed arms, and a genuine smile – all are signs of confidence and psychological safety.

The Three-Dimensional Miracle

If we put these three skills together – active listening, effective speaking, and positive body language – we create the image of a deep, complete connection. A connection where no one is sacrificed, no words are left unspoken, and no heart from that Friday night gathering remains broken from not being heard. My friend didn’t stay silent that night for no reason. He just didn’t know these three golden pillars before us. Now I understand that all of us sometimes need to review this triangle of love and communication and see where our actions are faltering.
