In today’s hectic world, we sometimes feel an urgent need to be alone with ourselves. This feeling is not a sign of weakness or abnormality. Rather, according to modern psychology findings, it is considered a fundamental human need that plays a vital role in mental health and personality development.

Solitude as a Conscious Choice

Contrary to popular belief, there is a fundamental difference between Solitude and the feeling of Loneliness. Dr. Mohammad Reza Arin, a psychiatrist and faculty member at Tehran University of Medical Sciences, explains in his book “The Psychology of Solitude”: “Healthy solitude is a state in which a person voluntarily and consciously dedicates time to being alone with themselves. This is while the feeling of loneliness is an unpleasant distress resulting from a lack of social connections.” (1)

Numerous studies show that regular periods of solitude provide an opportunity for deeper processing of experiences, organizing thoughts, and replenishing psychological resources. In fact, these times act like an ecosystem for nurturing creativity and critical thinking.

Silence: A Ground for Hearing the Inner Voice

In modern culture, silence is often associated with void and deficiency. However, from a psychological perspective, silence is a necessary space for self-knowledge. Professor Ali Najafipour, a professor of clinical psychology at Shahid Beheshti University, writes in his article “Silence Therapy”: “It is in silence that a person can free themselves from the constant noise of external stimuli and listen to their inner voice. This process is the cornerstone of self-awareness and spiritual growth.” (2)

Neuroscience research also shows that silence strengthens neural connections in areas of the brain related to memory, attention, and emotion regulation.

Solitude and Individual Identity

Perhaps one of the deepest functions of solitude is its role in forming an independent individual identity. Dr. Zahra Ahmadi, a personality psychologist, emphasizes in her research “Solitude and Identity Development” published in the Iranian Journal of Psychology: “It is in one’s solitude that a person can discover their authentic beliefs, values, and aspirations without being influenced by social expectations.” (3)

This finding is consistent with John Dewey’s theory of “Reflective Thinking,” which believes that deep thinking requires distancing oneself from immediate situations and contemplating in silence.

Solitude in the Context of Iranian Culture

In the Iranian mystical tradition, solitude and seclusion have held a special place. According to Dr. Seyed Hossein Hosseini, a researcher in Islamic philosophy in the book “Seclusion in Mystical Texts,” “Iranian mystics considered solitude necessary not for escaping society, but for attaining true knowledge of oneself and God.” (4) This view has a remarkable similarity with modern psychological findings.

Healthy Solitude in Practice

To benefit from the advantages of solitude, experts recommend:

· Designate specific times for solitude with yourself.
· Spend these times in a quiet environment without technological distractions.
· Use this opportunity for reflection and contemplation on your experiences.
· Maintain a balance between times of solitude and social interactions.

Conclusion

The need for solitude and silence is a psychological necessity in modern life that allows us to distance ourselves from external pressures, gain a deeper understanding of ourselves, and replenish our psychological resources. Accepting this need and planning to respond to it is an important step towards mental health and personal growth.

· A longitudinal study by Shiraz University (2020-2022) showed that people who regularly schedule times for solitude have higher mental health and greater life satisfaction compared to others.
