Dear reader, perhaps you too have found yourself amidst the flood of news about wars, sanctions, sectarian disputes, and identity crises in the Islamic world, asking: “Can the Islamic world ever become a united and powerful Ummah?” The answer, perhaps simpler than we imagine, lies in one word: **Tawhid**. But Tawhid not as a dry, clichéd slogan, but as a fundamental and unifying principle that can set the heart of modern Islamic civilization in motion.
## Tawhid: Beyond a Personal Belief
At its deepest level, Tawhid means belief in the oneness of God in His essence, attributes, and actions. But this belief is never confined to individual worship and personal rituals. Tawhid is a worldview; a perspective that sees all existence under the will and wisdom of a single Creator and organizes all dimensions of individual and social life around the axis of *”La ilaha illallah”* (there is no god but Allah). This principle is the very “rope of Allah” that the Holy Quran calls all Muslims to hold firmly: *”And hold firmly to the rope of Allah all together and do not become divided”* (Quran, Al-Imran 3:103).
Tawhid: The Core of the Ummah’s Shared Identity
In a world where the lines of distinction between nations, ethnicities, and sects multiply daily, Tawhid can serve as a focal point for redefining the collective “we.” A Muslim from Indonesia to Nigeria, from Iran to Senegal, despite differences in many branches and customs, whispers the testimony of God’s oneness at the heart of their belief. This fundamental commonality, if properly understood and highlighted, can be stronger than all sectarian differences and extreme nationalisms. Tawhid is a bulwark against the “divide and rule” project that the enemies of Islam have long pursued.
From Theoretical Tawhid to Social Tawhid
Tawhid does not remain only at the level of heartfelt and mental belief. **Social Tawhid** means that Muslims should reflect God’s oneness in their practical system of life as well. That is, they should consider sovereignty and legislation as belonging only to God, and stand against any form of human domination and taghuti (tyrannical) systems. This is the spirit that manifested in the Islamic Revolution of Iran, giving meaning to the slogan “Neither East, nor West – Islamic Republic” based on Tawhid in the political arena. Social Tawhid teaches Muslims to take independence, freedom, and justice not from dominating powers, but from their own revelatory source and sound reason.
Tawhid and Resistance Against Domination
One of the most effective dimensions of Tawhid in the present age is its role in creating **spiritual deterrence and **civilizational resistance**. When a society knows that only God holds absolute authority, it no longer fears the threats of material powers. Tawhid removes fear of the enemy from the hearts of believers and instead plants dignity, courage, and steadfastness. This is the lesson that Sayyid al-Shuhada (Imam Hussain, peace be upon him) taught the world in Karbala with his cry of *”Hayhat minna al-dhilla”* (Down with humiliation). Today’s Resistance front in Palestine, Lebanon, Syria, Yemen, and Iraq, though possessing limited material resources, stands against the world’s mightiest armies by relying on this very Tawhidic spirit.
The Role of Tawhid in Modern Islamic Civilization
Without being centered on Tawhid, modern Islamic civilization would be no different from other materialistic and secular civilizations. It is Tawhid that gives direction and meaning to science and technology; purifies the economy from usury and exploitation; saves politics from deceit and oppression; and guides art toward divine beauty. In a word, Tawhid is the **”civilizational DNA”** of the Islamic world. If we suffer today from “Islamophobia” and the “war of narratives,” the root lies in distancing ourselves from the correct and practical explanation of Tawhid.
Let Us Start with Ourselves
Perhaps we cannot change the map of the Middle East overnight, but each of us can, in our own environment, be an ambassador of practical Tawhid. By respecting our religious brothers and sisters, avoiding misplaced prejudices, striving for justice even in the smallest daily decisions, and narrating the story of Tawhid’s unifying power to the younger generation. Modern Islamic civilization is born from these seemingly small acts.
Dear reader, Tawhid is not an abstract concept, but the most alive and dynamic principle for the solidarity and progress of the Islamic world. If today our enemies, with all their media and military capabilities, seek to weaken Muslims, our answer is a return to this solid and vital principle. Let us together pledge to bring Tawhid from the margins to the center of our civilizational life.
